Description

Lagavulin 8 Year Old is a peated single malt from the south coast of Islay. The distillery dates back to 1816, when John Johnston founded it. This 8-year-old first appeared for Lagavulin's 200th anniversary. It has stayed in the range ever since.

In the 1880s the writer Alfred Barnard tasted an eight-year-old Lagavulin. He called it exceptionally fine. The distillery set out to recreate that younger style. The whisky is made from heavily peated malt and matured in refill American and European oak.

Your first nose is soft and clean, with milk chocolate and a squeeze of lemon. Tea-scented smoke and sea air follow. The palate is sweet, smoky and warming. You get charred notes, minty dark chocolate and salty, oven-baked potato skins. The finish is clean, very long and smoky, and it dries at the end.

This bottling won Double Gold at the 2018 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. The Ultimate Spirits Challenge gave it 97 points and a Chairman's Trophy that same year.

Pour it neat in a nosing glass, or add a drop of water to open the smoke. Try it with oysters, smoked meats, dark chocolate or aged cheese. If you love Islay whiskey, this is a lively way to enjoy Lagavulin's house style.
