The Kraken is a dark, bold spiced rum bottled at 94 proof, or 47% ABV. The brand calls it the world's first black spiced rum. It is also the top-selling black spiced rum in the US, based on Nielsen data the brand cites.

It starts with Caribbean rum made from molasses. According to Difford's Guide, the base rums come from Trinidad and age for one to two years. They are then blended with a secret recipe of 13 spices. The result looks almost black in the glass.

Open the bottle and you will smell caramel and toffee, with allspice and clove behind them. On the palate, vanilla and ginger lead the way. Cinnamon, nutmeg and a bite of peppercorn follow. The finish is smooth and clean, with a bold, spicy warmth that lingers.
