Jura 18 Year Old comes from the distillery on the Isle of Jura, a small island off the west coast of Scotland. Deer far outnumber people there. The first licensed distillery on the island opened in 1810. It later closed after a land dispute and was rebuilt in 1963. Water comes from Loch a'Bhaile-Mhargaidh, close to the village. The copper pot stills stand about 28 feet tall. Those tall necks are part of what makes the spirit light and fruity. This island Scotch is the oldest whisky in the core Jura range.

The whisky spends at least 18 years in American white oak casks that once held bourbon. It then finishes in red wine barriques from Premier Grand Cru Classé estates in Bordeaux. The bourbon wood gives vanilla, toffee and caramel. The Bordeaux casks add red fruit and a darker, richer edge. Jura sums up the style as fruity and balanced. The brand points to three key notes: red berries, caramel and a touch of sea salt. It is bottled at 44%, which gives it body without too much heat.

Pour a dram and give it a minute in the glass. The nose opens with sweet toffee and cinnamon spice. Red berries come next, along with a hint of tropical fruit. The palate is full and velvety. Black forest fruits lead, backed by caramel and toffee. Bitter chocolate and cocoa add depth. A light touch of smoke and a little sea salt remind you that this is an island malt. The finish is long and warm. Espresso and mocha linger with gentle oak spice. The red fruit fades slowly at the very end. Each layer shows a little of both casks, with bourbon sweetness up front and wine-driven fruit behind it.

Serve it neat in a Glencairn or tulip glass to catch the aroma. A few drops of water will open up more of the fruit. Some people enjoy it over one large cube on a warm evening. For food, try dark chocolate truffles, aged Gouda or roasted walnuts. Smoked duck and a slice of fruit cake also make good partners. A plate of blue cheese with honey is another fine match for the red fruit. Jura sees it as a dram for sharing after dinner, and it suits that role well.

Jura 18 has a strong record at competitions. It took Gold at the International Spirits Challenge in 2020 and Silver there in 2019. It also won Silver at the International Wine & Spirit Competition in 2019 and again in 2024. If you like fruit-led single malt with a little smoke, it is well worth a place in your whisky cabinet.
