Horse Soldier Bourbon was founded in 2015 by Scott Neil, John Koko and Elizabeth Pritchard-Koko. All three served in the Horse Soldier operation in Afghanistan. Soon after the 9/11 attacks, a dozen Green Berets rode into the mountains on horseback. They were among the first American troops sent to fight there.

Their story reached the big screen in the 2018 film 12 Strong, starring Chris Hemsworth. The bottle carries the story too. Its design echoes America's Response Monument, which overlooks Ground Zero. A steel I-beam from the World Trade Center was reforged into the bottle mold. So every bottle is touched by that steel.

Inside is a straight bourbon made from small batches of four-year-old whiskey. The mash is mostly corn, about 65%, with rye and malted barley. It ages in charred new American oak barrels. It is non-chill filtered for a fuller body and bottled at 87 proof, or 43.5% ABV.

You will smell toffee, sweet corn and a little apple. Your first sip brings vanilla, toasted corn and honey. A spiced rye note shows up on the finish. In 2022, it won a Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
