Hillrock Double Cask Rye Whiskey (750Ml)

Description

Hillrock Double Cask Rye comes from Hillrock Estate Distillery in Ancram, New York, in the Hudson Valley. It's made from 100% rye grown and milled on the estate. Dave Pickerell was the master distiller who helped shape it. Hillrock calls this way of working field to glass.

The rye is distilled in small batches in a copper pot still. It then ages in two barrels. First comes new American oak with a #3 char. Then it moves into new oak with a heavier #4 char. It's bottled at 90 proof, so it has strength without being harsh.

Pour a glass and you'll smell caramel, brown sugar and baking spice. Cinnamon, clove, honey and a touch of vanilla follow. The palate is bold and rich, with toffee, rye spice and chocolate over toasted bread. The finish is long and spicy, with clove, nutmeg and dark chocolate.

Wine Enthusiast rated it 94 points. It stands up well to smoked meats, barbecue and strong cheeses.

Sip it neat, or stir it into a Manhattan and other cocktails. If you like your rye spicy and full, this one deserves a spot on your shelf. Fans of softer, sweeter whiskey might find it a little bold.
