Highland Park Fire Edition is a 15 year old single malt from the Orkney Islands. It spent its whole life in refill casks seasoned with Port wine. That was a first for the distillery. The release closed a two-part series that began with the Ice Edition.

The theme comes from Norse myth. Fire Edition honors Muspelheim, the blazing realm of the fire giants. The whisky sits in crimson glass on a black wooden cradle. Only 28,000 bottles were made for the whole world when it launched in late 2016.

Bring the glass to your nose and you meet ruby red fruit and ripe cherry first. Warm vanilla, dark chocolate and a little cinnamon follow. A soft wisp of smoke stays in the background. On the palate it feels full and rich. Vanilla fudge, honey and fresh orange zest meet toasted oak. The distillery's gentle peat smoke runs quietly through it all.

The finish is long and lightly smoky. Spicy oak and a last trace of red fruit stay with you. It is bottled at natural color and without chill filtration, so the texture stays full.

Pour it neat into a tulip glass and give it a few minutes to open. Add a drop or two of water if you want the fruit to come forward. Try it with smoked venison, aged gouda or a berry tart. Collectors love this crimson bottle, and it makes a striking gift for any Scotch fan.
