Description

Henry McKenna Single Barrel is a 10-year-old Kentucky Straight Bourbon from Heaven Hill. Each bottle is filled from a single barrel, and no two barrels taste quite alike. It is Bottled-in-Bond at 100 proof, or 50% ABV, and it is a favorite with whiskey lovers.

The Bottled-in-Bond Act was signed on March 3, 1897. Its rules call for one distillery, one distilling season and one distiller. The whiskey must age at least four years in a bonded warehouse and be bottled at exactly 100 proof. This one rests through 40 Kentucky seasons, which makes it one of the longest-aged bonded bourbons you can buy.

The mash bill is 78% corn, 12% malted barley and 10% rye. The name honors Henry McKenna, an Irishman who came to America in 1837. He settled in Kentucky and adapted his family's whiskey recipe to the grains he found there. Heaven Hill, which began in Bardstown, makes it today.

In the glass it shows a warm golden amber. You get vanilla, caramel and oak on the nose, with a light herbal note. The palate brings smooth oak, sharp spice, honey and sweetness. The finish is long, sweet and spicy.

Judges have taken notice. At the 2019 San Francisco World Spirits Competition it won Best in Show Whiskey. It also took Best Single Barrel there in 2021 and a Double Gold in 2024. In 2024 the ASCOT Awards gave it Double Platinum, and the TAG Global Spirits Awards added a Double Gold.

Sip it neat or on the rocks to taste each barrel's character. It also makes a sturdy Old Fashioned. Grilled meats, dark chocolate and smoked cheese all pair well.
