Description

Henebery Celebrated Whiskey is a spiced rye whiskey from Southern California. The family brand is based in San Diego County. Jesse Fanning launched it in 2013 with his wife Natalie and her family. The name goes back much further. Natalie’s ancestor Matthew Henebery made whiskey in Peoria, Illinois, starting in 1851.

The base is a rye whiskey made from 95% rye and 5% barley. Early batches were distilled under contract in Los Angeles. The family later opened its own distillery and tasting room in Vista. The whiskey is then infused in layers, with each ingredient added at its own stage. Organic vanilla, cardamom and orange rind go into the mix. The idea is to add flavor without hiding the rye.

Pour a glass and rye spice comes first on the nose, with citrus peel and vanilla close behind. The palate is spicy but silky. Sweet vanilla and a little caramel meet clove, cardamom and orange peel. The finish stays long and warm, with rye spice and a soft vanilla sweetness.

It is bottled at 90 proof, so it has real body. Sip it neat or over one large ice cube to get the full spice. It also shines in an Old Fashioned, where the orange and vanilla already do half the work. At its launch, bartenders mixed it with maple, ginger and lemon too.

You will enjoy this bottle if you like rye but want something a little different. It is a fun pour for friends who think they have tried every whiskey. Seasoned drinkers and curious beginners can both find something here. It also brings a bit of California craft history to your bar cart.
