Hangar 1 Makrut Lime is a flavored vodka from Alameda, California. The distillery set up shop in 2001 inside a World War II aircraft hangar. That hangar stands on the old Alameda Naval Air Station, across the bay from San Francisco. The base spirit is distilled from a mix of grain and grapes.

The flavor comes from makrut lime, a citrus prized in Thai cooking. Hangar 1 uses the leaves, which are packed with fragrant oils. The result smells tart and bright. Lemongrass and ginger mingle with plenty of lime.

Your first sip is fresh and slightly dry. Bold lime arrives right away. Then come hints of wood, white pepper and cucumber. The finish lingers and stays dry, with none of the candy taste of many flavored vodkas. It is bottled at 80 proof.

Mix it with soda and a squeeze of lime for an easy highball. It also makes a sharp lime martini. Pour it alongside ceviche, grilled shrimp or other light seafood.
