Description

Hakushu 18 Year Old comes from Suntory's forest distillery. It sits deep in the woods on the slopes of Mt. Kaikomagatake, in Japan's Southern Alps. The air there is cool and often misty, and the mountain water is soft and pure. This Japanese single malt rests for at least 18 years before bottling at 43% ABV. In the glass it shows a deep gold color.

Hakushu is known for a crisp, gently smoky style with herbal notes. Here that style turns rich and refined. Bring the glass close and you find ripe pear, dried mint and oregano. A wisp of smoke drifts underneath. Your first sip opens up with jasmine and juicy mango. Quince and a cool touch of menthol follow. The finish is long and softly smoky, with a hint of bitterness at the very end.

Judges keep rewarding this bottle. It has won Gold at the International Spirits Challenge in 2019, 2020, 2022, 2025 and 2026. Whisky Advocate scored it 90 points.

Pour it neat first so you catch every layer. A few drops of water can open up the fruit. You can also try it in the Japanese Mizuwari style, with cold water and ice. On the table, it suits grilled seafood, smoked meats or aged cheese.

Suntory helped found Japanese whisky, and its 18-year-old malts are hard to find. You will usually see this one in a 750ml bottle, though some markets get 700ml. If you collect fine whisky, or want a special gift, this is a bottle to treasure.
