Description

Green Spot Château Léoville Barton comes from Midleton Distillery in County Cork, and it is a single pot still whiskey. Pot still is a style found only in Ireland. It is made from a mash of malted and unmalted barley. Green Spot itself began life with Mitchell & Son, the Dublin wine merchants.

The whiskey first matures in a mix of ex-oloroso sherry casks, fresh American oak and ex-bourbon barrels. It then spends 12 to 24 months in French oak casks from Château Léoville Barton, a grand cru estate in Saint-Julien, Bordeaux. It was the first single pot still Irish whiskey finished in Bordeaux casks. You get it at 46% ABV, with no age statement.

The bottle tells a story of two Irish families. Thomas Barton left Ireland and set up a Bordeaux wine business in 1725. He was one of the so-called Wine Geese. His descendants, Anthony and Lilian Barton, still look after Léoville Barton today.

On the nose, French oak leads with woodland notes and peppery pot still spice. Then the wine comes through as floral perfume, ripe berries and orchard fruit. The palate coats your mouth. Vanilla sweetness meets dry orchard fruit, oak and spice, with barley in the background and a touch of wine. As the oak slowly fades, wine and spice linger.

The awards back it up. It was named World's Best Pot Still Whiskey at the 2016 World Whiskies Awards. It also scored 96 points at the 2017 Ultimate Spirits Challenge and took Gold at the 2019 Irish Whiskey Masters.

Sip it neat, or add a drop or two of water. Dark chocolate, roasted nuts or a creamy cheese make easy partners. If you love Irish whiskey and red Bordeaux, this one brings both together in a single glass.
