Green River Distilling Co. was founded in 1885 by J.W. McCulloch in Owensboro, Kentucky. It holds permit DSP-KY-10, making it the tenth oldest licensed distillery in the state. Its whiskey was once the official medicinal pour of the U.S. Marine Hospital. A fire and then Prohibition stopped production for decades. Today the distillery is back, and it sits on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.

This Kentucky straight rye was the brand's third core release, launched in early 2024. The mash is 95% rye and 5% malted barley. It is distilled, aged and bottled on site. The blend draws on barrels aged four to six years. It is bottled at 95 proof.

Pour a glass and you will see a rich auburn color. The nose is bright, with citrus, fresh mint and rye spice over a soft sweetness. On the palate the spice warms up. Orange peel and spearmint ride on a base of vanilla and graham cracker. A little black pepper keeps it lively.

The finish is medium in length. You get a light rye bite, a hint of herbal tea and soft oak. The head distiller calls it approachable and easy drinking, with a finish you remember.

It is a strong pick for a Manhattan, an Old Fashioned or a rye sour. You can also sip it neat with dark chocolate or smoked meats. If you want everyday rye whiskey with real Kentucky roots, this bottle fits the bill.
