Stagg Bourbon is crafted by the famous Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. It was first released as Stagg Jr. and later renamed Stagg in 2021/2022. This is a Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey that’s Barrel Proof (Cask Strength), meaning it’s bottled straight from the barrel without being cut or filtered. Because it’s uncut and unfiltered, the proof varies with each batch, usually ranging between 125 and 133 (around 62.5%–66.5% ABV).
Although it doesn’t carry an age statement, Stagg is typically aged 7 to 9 years, making it younger than its legendary counterpart, George T. Stagg. It’s made using Buffalo Trace’s Mash Bill #1, a low-rye recipe also used for Buffalo Trace Bourbon and Eagle Rare.
Stagg is known for its bold and rich flavor, offering notes of dark chocolate, cherry, brown sugar, vanilla, and spice. Each batch is released twice a year, and because of its popularity, bottles can be hard to find at retail prices, which usually range between $50 and $70—though resale prices are often much higher. Whiskey lovers admire it for its intense flavor, complexity, and great value among barrel-proof bourbons. Some of the strongest batches, over 140 proof, are even nicknamed “Hazmat.”
