Frangelico is a premium hazelnut-flavored liqueur made in the beautiful Piedmont region of Northern Italy, an area famous for its high-quality hazelnuts. It is crafted from Tonda Gentile hazelnuts, blended with natural extracts of cocoa, vanilla, and coffee to create a smooth and indulgent flavor. The liqueur comes in a standard 750ml bottle and contains 20% alcohol by volume (40 proof), though earlier versions had slightly higher strength.
Frangelico has a clear, light golden or amber color and a delightful aroma filled with the scent of toasted hazelnuts, vanilla, and chocolate. On the palate, it tastes rich, sweet, and creamy, with warm notes of hazelnut, vanilla, and dark chocolate. The finish is long, smooth, and fragrant, leaving a pleasant sweetness behind.
With a recipe that dates back over 300 years, Frangelico was originally created by Christian monks in the Piedmont hills. Its name comes from Fra’ Angelico, a legendary hermit monk, and the bottle itself is shaped like a Franciscan friar, complete with a cord tied around the waist.
You can enjoy Frangelico neat, over ice, chilled as a shot, or mixed into coffee and cocktails such as a Nutty Irishman or Hazelnut Martini. Today, it is proudly owned by Gruppo Campari.
