Description

Fonseca Bin No. 27 is the Reserve Port that made this old Porto house famous around the world. You may also see it called Finest Reserve or Premium Reserve. The story goes that it began as a private blend for the Fonseca family. It went on sale to the public in 1972, and it has been a favorite ever since.

The grapes come from the Douro Valley in Portugal, much of it from Fonseca's own estates. The house blends reserve wines and ages them for about four years in large oak vats. It is a full-bodied, sweet fortified wine at 20% ABV. It is bottled ready to drink, so you never need to decant it.

Pour a glass and you will see a deep, youthful ruby color. The nose is packed with blackberry, cassis, cherry and plum, with a light thread of spice. In your mouth it feels round and full, with a smooth, velvety texture and firm tannins. Juicy black fruit stays with you right into a rich, lush finish.

Critics like it too. Anthony Dias Blue of The Tasting Panel gave it 91 points in 2018. Wine & Spirits scored it 90 points in 2017, and Richard Mayson gave it 90 points in Decanter in 2015.

Serve it a little cool, around 60 to 64°F. A wedge of farmhouse cheddar is the classic match. It also loves dark chocolate desserts and anything made with berries. Once you open the bottle, it stays at its best for about two months. That makes it an easy bottle to keep around after dinner.
