FEW Straight Rye Whiskey comes from FEW Spirits in Evanston, Illinois. That town was once the home base of the Temperance Movement, so a distillery there carries a wink. The name FEW even nods to Frances Elizabeth Willard, a leading temperance figure. What you get is a true grain-to-glass rye.

The mash bill is 70% Midwestern rye, 20% local corn and 10% two-row malted barley. The spirit rests for at least four years in new, air-dried oak barrels. FEW makes it in a pre-Prohibition style. It goes into the bottle at 93 proof, which keeps the flavor full without too much heat.

Pour a glass and the nose opens with crisp grain, caramel and honey. On the palate you find rich sweetness lifted by pepper, ginger and vanilla. The finish runs long. Toasted oak, cherry, plum and pear stay with you at the end. Many tasters also find apple, cinnamon and candied orange peel, with fresh orange on the finish.

Judges keep noticing this rye. It won Gold at the 2021 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. It scored 95 points at the 2021 Ultimate Spirits Challenge. The 2024 TAG Global Spirits Awards gave it Double Gold, plus a Best in Show title. Back in 2013, Whisky Advocate named it Craft Whiskey of the Year.

Sip it neat to catch every layer, or stir it into a Manhattan or other classic cocktails. The pepper and stone fruit hold up well against sweet vermouth. Try it with smoked meats, aged cheddar or a bowl of ripe plums. You will like it if you want a rye with real spice and a fruity side.
