El Tequileno Gran Reserva Reposado (750Ml)

Description

El Tequileño has been making tequila in the town of Tequila since 1959. Don Jorge Salles Cuervo founded the family distillery that year. Today his grandson runs it, in the same place and with the same recipe. The distillery makes only one tequila brand, under NOM 1108.

The process starts with mature blue agave from the Highlands of Jalisco. It is mixed with mineral-rich water that flows down from El Volcán de Tequila. Distillation happens in copper pot stills. Nothing fancy is added. The brand keeps things simple and lets the agave and the wood do the work.

Gran Reserva is the brand's step up from its classic reposado. The base tequila rests at least eight months in American oak, much longer than the usual few months. The blenders then fold in a small share of añejo that has aged for 18 months. That splash of older tequila gives the blend extra depth and a rounder feel.

Pour a glass and give it a moment to breathe. Swirl it gently and watch the pale gold color catch the light. Vanilla and caramel rise first. Banana, caramelized pear and a touch of citrus follow. A bold hit of black pepper follows, along with warm baking spice and a little oak. The palate is softer than the nose suggests. Vanilla, caramel and toffee lead the way. Nutty notes, like macadamia and almond, come through in the middle. The finish is sweet and silky, with a gentle white pepper tingle.

Judges have taken notice. Gran Reserva won Gold and Best in Show at the 2024 TAG Global Spirits Awards. San Francisco World Spirits Competition judges handed it a Silver medal as well. The brand also cites a Tequila Matchmaker rating of 86 out of 100.

You can sip it neat, but it really shines on the rocks. It also makes a lovely Mexican Old Fashioned. Bring it to the table with carne asada, barbecued ribs or chicken in mole.
