Made by Duckhorn Vineyards, this wine is primarily Merlot, with small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot depending on the vintage. It comes from the famous Three Palms Vineyard in Napa Valley, California, which is named for its three iconic palm trees. The vineyard’s warm, rocky soils help produce grapes that are concentrated and full of flavor. Since 1978, Duckhorn has been crafting Merlot from this vineyard, and over the years, it has become a benchmark for New World Merlot, changing how wine lovers view this grape. The wine has received high ratings from critics, and the 2014 vintage was even named “Wine of the Year” by Wine Spectator in 2017.
This Merlot is full-bodied and complex, offering flavors of black cherry, plum, huckleberry, and fig, along with hints of cocoa, chocolate, baking spices, cedar, and earthy notes. It has a rich texture, good acidity, and smooth, elegant tannins, making it perfect for aging. The wine is typically aged 18 months in 100% French oak, often mostly new oak. With an alcohol content of around 14.5% ABV, it comes in a 750ml bottle or larger formats like a 1.5L Magnum. As an ultra-premium wine, priced around $140–$160 or more, it can be enjoyed now or aged for many years to gain even more complexity.
