This red wine is primarily made from Merlot grapes, blended with small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon, and sometimes Cabernet Franc or Petit Verdot, usually containing about 80–85% Merlot. It comes from Napa Valley, California, USA, and is sold in a standard 750ml bottle.
The first Duckhorn Vineyards Napa Valley Merlot was produced in 1978, and since then, Duckhorn has become famous for showcasing the rich flavor and quality of Napa Valley Merlot. The wine is often described as elegant, smooth, and luxurious, offering layers of dark red and black fruits such as ripe plum, black cherry, and raspberry, along with subtle hints of cocoa, vanilla, mocha, and sweet spices from oak aging.
It has a soft, velvety texture with smooth tannins and is aged in French oak barrels for about 15 months, including some new barrels, giving it added depth. The alcohol level is typically around 14.5%, and the wine consistently receives excellent reviews, often scoring in the low to mid-90s from critics like James Suckling, Wine Spectator, and Wine Enthusiast. Duckhorn Merlot pairs wonderfully with grilled beef, lamb, roasted vegetables, mushroom risotto, or duck. The winery carefully selects grapes from its estate vineyards and top growers across Napa Valley, making it a pioneer in premium American Merlot and helping it gain worldwide respect.
