Del Maguey Single Village Mezcal Joven is an unaged mezcal that comes in a 750ml bottle and typically has 42% alcohol by volume (84 proof). It is made entirely from Espadín agave and produced in the village of San Luis del Río, Oaxaca, Mexico. The brand, founded by Ron Cooper and now part of Pernod Ricard, is known for crafting mezcal using traditional methods passed down through generations.
The agave hearts are slow-roasted in underground pits with river rocks, giving the mezcal its signature smoky flavor. After roasting, the agave is crushed using a horse-driven stone wheel (tahona) and then fermented naturally in wooden vats, preserving its authentic taste. The spirit is distilled twice in small wood-fired copper stills, enhancing its complexity.
On the nose, Mezcal Joven offers aromas of smoke, roasted agave, citrus, tropical fruits, honey, and herbs, while the taste delivers smoky notes of cooked agave, ginger, cinnamon, burnt sandalwood, banana, and tangerine. It has a long, smooth, warming finish with lingering smoke. This mezcal is easy to drink and versatile, making it perfect for sipping neat or mixing into cocktails. Known worldwide as an authentic entry-level mezcal, it is approachable for beginners and enjoyed by seasoned drinkers alike.
