Description

Condesa Prickly Pear & Orange Blossom Gin is a small-batch gin made in Mexico City. Master distiller Hillhamn Salome co-created it. It is made at Flor de Luna, a women-owned micro-distillery that opened in 2015.

Every ingredient comes from Mexico. The base is a grain spirit made from corn, rye, wheat and barley. The botanicals are juniper, xoconostle (a tart magenta prickly pear), raspberry, coriander and lime zest. They soak for two days and then run through small copper pot stills. Orange blossom is distilled on its own and blended in at the end. No sugar is added, so the gin stays truly dry.

The nose leans toward red fruit from the prickly pear, with a little pop of raspberry. On the palate you get bright citrus and juicy prickly pear. Orange blossom brings a soft floral lift. Judges at the Bartender Spirits Awards also found sage and bay leaf, with a soft, earthy brightness at the close. The juniper is turned down, so it feels light and summery. The finish is clean and dry, with a fresh squeeze of lime.

Try it in a gin and tonic with an orange peel. It also loves fruit-forward classics like the Aviation, Clover Club or Bramble. Serve it with grilled seafood, goat cheese or a citrus salad. If you are new to gin, this bright, gentle bottle is a friendly place to start.
