    Description

Royal Salute 21 Year Old is the flagship blend of the Royal Salute range. It was first created in 1953 as a gift for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Charles Julian defined that first signature blend. The name comes from the 21-gun salute fired at the Tower of London on royal occasions. Every whisky in the blend has aged for at least 21 years, and it is bottled at 40% ABV.

Chivas Brothers make this blended Scotch, drawing on a long history of blending rare whiskies. The whiskies are hand-selected from rare and special stocks. Some of them are watched over in the Royal Salute Vault before they join the blend. Speyside distilleries play a central part in its production. Master Blender Sandy Hyslop looks after the recipe today. Royal Salute is the only Scotch whisky brand whose range begins at 21 years old. Every bottle in the permanent range is aged 21 years or more, so this blend is where the collection starts.

You will know the bottle on sight. It comes in a porcelain flagon glazed in jewel tones inspired by the Crown Jewels. Sapphire blue is the classic shade, and emerald green and ruby red versions also exist. That sapphire glaze takes its cue from the precious stones set in the Imperial State Crown. Royal Doulton made the first flagon in 1953. Today Wade Ceramics in the UK makes them. The color you receive may vary.

Lift the glass and sweet pears and citrus fruit come first. The full fragrance of autumn flowers follows and adds a soft, rich layer. On the palate, sweet orange marmalade and fresh pear burst across the tongue. A second wave brings a medley of spices and the nutty depth of hazelnut, with a mouth-filling intensity. A subtle smokiness sits underneath, with hints of chocolate and coconut. The finish is long, dry and slightly spicy. The texture feels rich, round and velvety from the first sip to the last.

Judges in San Francisco have rewarded it again and again. At the San Francisco World Spirits Competition it won Gold in 2012 and Double Gold in 2013. It took Gold again in 2014 and once more in 2018. Those results back up its place as the heart of the range. They also show how steady the blend has stayed from year to year.

Sip it neat to enjoy the fruit and spice in full. Let the glass rest for a minute after you pour, so the aromas can open. A large ice cube or a few drops of water also work well. Try it with roast lamb or duck, aged cheese, a rich fruitcake or dark chocolate. Use a tulip-shaped glass if you have one, so the floral notes gather at the rim. Add water one drop at a time and taste again after each drop. If you enjoy fruity, gently spiced blends with real age behind them, this one will suit you well. The porcelain flagon also makes it a striking gift. It suits birthdays, retirements, weddings and other big milestones. Long after the whisky is gone, the flagon still looks handsome on a shelf or home bar. To compare it with other bottles, browse more Scotch whisky or explore our wider whiskey collection.
