Charles Goodnight Texas Straight Bourbon is a big, barrel strength whiskey from the Lone Star State. It rests six years in new charred American white oak and comes to you at 115 proof.

The mash is 60% Texas-grown corn, 36% rye and 4% barley. That high rye share brings a peppery bite to the corn sweetness. Water from deep Texas aquifers goes into every batch, and the hot Texas summers push the spirit hard into the wood.

Expect toasted caramel and toffee on the nose, with ripe apricot and darker fruit behind it. The palate is nutty and peppery, with baking spice, maple and a touch of chocolate. The finish runs long and spicy, ending on toasted nuts. Look too for brown sugar on the nose and a touch of honey at the close.

Judges have noticed. It won Double Gold and Best in Show at the 2024 TAG Global Spirits Awards with 92 points. It was also named Best Straight Bourbon at the 2024 London Spirits Competition. Wine Enthusiast scored it 94 points.

At this strength, a few drops of water or one large ice cube will open it up. Pour it next to smoked brisket, barbecue ribs or pecan pie.
