Caymus Vineyards, run by the Wagner family in Napa Valley, makes this wine from Durif, also called Petite Sirah in California. The grapes come from Suisun Valley, where warm days and cool nights create rich, flavorful fruit. Caymus calls this wine “Grand Durif” to highlight its bold, opulent style and the care that goes into crafting it.
You’ll notice intense dark fruit flavors—blackberry, blueberry compote, and plum—layered with chocolate, mocha, violet florals, and a hint of black pepper. Despite Petite Sirah’s reputation for strong tannins, this wine is plush, velvety, and full-bodied, with a deep, inky color. Aging in oak barrels adds subtle notes of vanilla, cedar, and spice. Its alcohol content sits around 14.8–15.4%, giving it a warm, rounded finish.
Decant it for an hour to fully enjoy the aromas and flavors. Pair it with grilled ribeye, braised short ribs, lamb, or even dark chocolate desserts. Each vintage brings slight differences based on the year’s weather, but the wine consistently delivers Caymus’ signature rich, fruit-forward style at a premium value.
