Caribou Crossing Canadian Whisky Single Barrel was launched as the world's first single barrel Canadian whisky. Each bottle is filled from one barrel, never a blend of many. The brand belongs to the Sazerac Company. It is made at Sazerac's Old Montreal Distillery in Canada.

The barrels are drawn from a master collection of about 200,000. Master blender Drew Mayville picks them himself. Each bottle is filled by hand and capped with a small caribou on the stopper. It is bottled at 80 proof.

Pour a glass and caramel and vanilla rise first, with a little light oak. The palate is smooth and easy. Vanilla and caramel lead, and gentle spice and oak follow. The finish turns warm, with clove, allspice and a last touch of vanilla. Because every barrel differs, your bottle may lean a little sweeter or spicier.

It has done well with judges. It won Gold at the International Spirits Challenge in both 2020 and 2021. It also took Gold at the 2021 North American Bourbon & Whiskey Competition. The San Francisco World Spirits Competition gave it Silver in 2020. In 2023 it scored 93 points at the Ultimate Spirits Challenge.

Sip it neat, on the rocks or with a splash of water. It sits well beside grilled steak, smoked barbecue or aged cheddar. A square of dark chocolate brings out the caramel and vanilla. Try it next to roast lamb or grilled pork as well.

This is a lovely pick if you enjoy smooth, mellow whisky. It is also a fun way to learn what single barrel bottling means. Collectors may enjoy comparing bottles from different barrels side by side.
