Description

Burnarj is a sparkling wine made from oranges, not grapes. The name joins two Spanish words: burbujas, meaning bubbles, and naranja, meaning orange. It is made in Palma del Río, in the Córdoba province of Andalusia. The fruit comes from orange groves in the Guadalquivir valley.

The method is close to the one used for cava. Pure orange juice ferments once, turning its sugar into alcohol. It then ferments a second time in the bottle, and that is where the bubbles come from. No carbonation is added. It takes around two litres of juice to fill one bottle.

This is the Brut, the dry style in the range, at 11% alcohol. You will see a pale color in the glass. It drinks fresh and refreshing. The orange is there, but it stays gentle instead of loud and sugary.

You don’t need to know much about wine to enjoy it. It suits wine lovers and casual drinkers alike. Chill it well and pour it as an aperitif or at brunch. Add a twist of orange peel for an easy mimosa-style glass, or use it as the fizz in a spritz.
