Bulleit Bourbon sounds just like "bullet," and it hits with the same energy. Tom Bulleit revived the brand in 1987, based on an old family recipe. Today it is one of the best-known high-rye bourbons around. It works for easy sipping and for mixing. If you are building a home bar, it is a smart first bottle. You can shop more whiskey to sit beside it on the shelf.

The mash bill is 68% corn, 28% rye and 4% malted barley. That much rye gives the whiskey its kick. It is bottled at 90 proof, or 45% ABV. The color is a medium amber. On the nose, you get gentle spice and sweet oak. The palate is smooth, with maple, oak and a dusting of nutmeg. The finish is long, dry and satiny, with a light touch of toffee.

Bulleit has a long list of honors. It won Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2004, 2007, 2012 and 2021. It also took Silver there in 2005, 2006 and 2014. The Beverage Testing Institute gave it Gold in 2008 and 2012. Spirit Journal rated it 4 Stars in 2011.

For a simple pour, try it in a rocks glass with one big ice cube. Bartenders reach for it in classic cocktails such as the Old Fashioned and the Manhattan.
