The Balvenie, still one of my most loved refineries, as of late dispatched a major sibling expression to run with their fiercely well known 12 year-old DoubleWood. An extra 5 years of development in customary ex-Bourbon oak containers, trailed by a comparable short (not exactly a year) dunk in ex-sherry European oak, gives a flawless equalization of natural product, oak, and malt. Doubters may wail about the moderately short sherry development (thinking of some as malts, for example, The Macallan and GlenDronach are matured solely in sherry for their whole development periods), yet it's my assessment that The Balvenie's home style is so light, inconspicuous, and exquisite that it needs just a plunge in sherry to understand its maximum capacity. Quite a while in ex-sherry would, I trust, wash out the refinery qualities of heather and nectar and would yield just a dull natural product punch of a malt. The world is brimming with sherry-bombs, The Balvenie is about nuance and artfulness.
