The Balvenie 12 Year Old Doublewood Scotch Whisky (750Ml)

Description

The Balvenie is a Speyside distillery in Dufftown, founded in 1892. It is known for keeping traditional crafts alive. That care reaches all the way back to the barley, which is still grown the way it always has been.

DoubleWood 12 is the whisky that made the distillery famous. It first spends 12 years in American oak casks, which add soft vanilla spice. It then moves into European oak sherry casks for about nine more months. Those casks add fruit, honey and depth, and the two-cask journey gives the whisky its name.

Raise the glass and you will find sweet fruit and Oloroso sherry, layered with honey and vanilla. The sip is smooth and mellow, with nutty sweetness and a little cinnamon spice. A light layer of sherry runs through it all. The finish is long and warming.

It has a shelf full of medals. It won Double Gold at the 2021 San Francisco World Spirits Competition and Gold at the 2022 International Wine & Spirit Competition. It also took Gold at San Francisco and at the International Spirits Challenge in 2024. In 2025 it added a Silver at the International Spirits Challenge.

Sip it neat so you can taste both casks. A couple of drops of water will bring out more fruit. It is lovely with roast duck, creamy cheeses or crème brûlée.
