    Germany's classic Weinbrand, Asbach Uralt is distilled twice and aged at least three years in Limousin oak casks. It is the flagship of one of Germany's oldest spirits names.

    The color is red-gold, close enough to bourbon to fool a guest at first glance. Apricot, vanilla, caramel, and almond rise from the glass, with a sweet, almost sherry-like depth. On the palate it is sweet and thick, with intense dark fruit and oak, then black pepper leading into a hot finish.

    Serve it neat at room temperature or with a single ice cube. German tradition puts it alongside coffee, or straight into the cup. It is a good find for a brandy drinker who has only tried French bottles so far.
