An aperitif is a drink you enjoy before a meal to wake up your appetite. Aperol is the bright orange one behind the famous Spritz. Brothers Luigi and Silvio Barbieri created it in Padua in 1919. They launched it at the Padua International Fair. The recipe has not changed since then, and today Aperol belongs to Gruppo Campari.
The flavor comes from an infusion of herbs, roots and citrus. Bitter orange plays a key role. Gentian, cinchona and rhubarb are part of the secret blend too. At just 11% alcohol, it stays light and easy to sip.
Lift the glass and you get zesty orange with herbal notes and a hint of vanilla. The taste is intensely orange, with herbs and a pleasant bittersweet edge. It feels velvety and rounded in the mouth. The finish lingers with herbal, bittersweet notes.
Aperol has earned plenty of attention. At the 2019 Australian Drinks Awards, it won Gaining Popularity in the Aperitif/Liqueur spirits category.
The classic serve is an Aperol Spritz with prosecco and a splash of soda over ice. Add an orange slice and you are set. It is a great pick if you like drinks that are bitter and sweet at once.
