Angel's Envy Finished Rye takes a spicy rye whiskey and gives it a sweet Caribbean twist. The mash is 95% rye and 5% malted barley. It ages for about six years in new American oak. Then it spends up to 18 months in casks that once held Caribbean rum. The team tasted more than 100 rums to find the right match. It is bottled at 100 proof.

Angel's Envy was founded by Lincoln Henderson, the man who created Woodford Reserve. He set out to go beyond traditional bourbon methods. Finishing whiskey in unusual casks became the brand's calling card. This rye made Whisky Advocate's Top 10 Whiskies list in its Summer 2013 issue.

Bring the glass to your nose and you get citrus, caramel candy and maple sugar. Vanilla, hazelnut, oak and spice follow, with a hint of sherry wood. The palate opens with sweet rum, then sherry wood and soft oak. The finish is both sweet and dry. It is quick and clean, so the next sip comes easily.

The rum finish calms the rye's raw, earthy spice. Even at full proof, it drinks smoothly. Sip it neat or with a single cube of ice. It also makes a rich Manhattan or Old Fashioned.
