A. Overholt Straight Rye Whiskey Monongahela Mash brings back an old style of American rye. Monongahela rye takes its name from a river valley in western Pennsylvania. Abraham Overholt started his whiskey brand there in 1810. Overholt calls it the longest-standing American whiskey brand still in production.

Today the whiskey is made by James B. Beam Distilling Co. in Clermont, Kentucky. The mash is 80% rye and 20% malted barley, with no corn at all. Overholt says this is the same split its founder used. It is bottled at 95 proof and rests about four years in oak. It reached shelves nationwide in April 2024.

Pour a glass and caramel comes first, with soft hints of sandalwood and caraway. On the palate, brown butter and honeysuckle lead the way. Clove and seasoned oak follow. The finish lingers with warm, rich baking spice.

Drink it neat, or add one large cube to let the spice open up. It also makes a fine Manhattan, Sazerac or Old Fashioned. Pair it with smoked brisket, aged cheddar or a board of charcuterie.
