Willet 4 Year Rye (750Ml)

Description

This estate-bottled straight rye comes from the Willett Distillery, a historic family name in Kentucky. The family went back to distilling on site in the early 2010s, after a gap of more than 30 years. Their first estate rye, a two-year-old, came out in 2014.

This one rests four years in new charred white oak barrels. It blends two of the distillery's own rye recipes. One is a high-rye mash at 74% rye, the other sits at 51% rye. Each small batch goes into the bottle at cask strength, so the proof shifts a little between batches.

Start with the nose. Caramel, toasted oak and cinnamon rise first, over a base of rye bread. On the palate, bold rye spice leads the way. Dark chocolate, vanilla and a touch of cherry follow, with a cool hint of menthol.

The texture is rich and almost oily, even at this strength. The finish runs long and warm. Black pepper, oak spice and toasted grain stay with you before a gentle, dry close.

Taste it neat at first. A few drops of water will open up more fruit and spice. It also builds a sturdy Manhattan. Pair it with smoked meats, aged cheddar or a dark chocolate dessert. Rye drinkers who enjoy big flavor and high proof will feel right at home.
