The Dalmore 18 Year Old is a rich single malt whisky from the Scottish Highlands. It begins in American white oak casks that once held bourbon. It then meets Matusalem oloroso sherry casks. The classic split is 14 years in American white oak, then three years in Matusalem sherry butts. A final 12 months married in upstanding sherry butts completes the 18 years.

Those sherry casks are about 30 years old. The distillery says they are reserved for its own whisky makers. That long sherry contact gives the whisky its deep color and dark fruit.

Lift the glass and you get vanilla and dark chocolate first. English marmalade and a hint of sweet liquorice follow. On the palate, chocolate-coated raisins meet bright citrus and rich coffee. Nutmeg and gentle spice build as you sip.

The finish is warm and steady. Stewed fruits and toffee stay with you for a good while. It is bottled at 43% ABV, so the texture stays smooth and round.

The 18 has picked up praise along the way, including Gold at the International Spirits Challenge in 2021. Many drinkers count it among the best Scotch whiskies in its age range.
