Description

Old Grand-Dad is a high-rye Kentucky bourbon with deep roots. Raymond B. Hayden created the brand in 1882. He named it for his grandfather, Basil Hayden Sr., a well-known distiller of his day. Basil liked to use more rye in his mash than most.

That spicy style lives on today. The mash is about 63% corn, 27% rye and 10% malted barley. It is distilled at the Jim Beam distillery in Clermont, Kentucky. Basil's portrait still sits on the label. This version is bottled at 80 proof and has a golden honey-brown color.

Vanilla and caramel greet you on the nose, along with a rye-bread spice. The palate is medium-bodied, with vanilla, caramel and toffee. Peppery spice, like cinnamon and clove, builds as you sip. The finish is long and spicy, with caramel left behind.

This is a value bourbon made for mixing. Try it in a Bourbon Sour, a Boulevardier or a Kentucky Mule. If you drink it straight, chill it first to bring the caramel forward.
