Description

Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban is a 14-year-old single malt from the Scottish Highlands. It begins life in American white oak bourbon casks, where it rests for about 10 years. Then it moves into ruby port casks from the wine estates of Portugal. In 2019 this 14-year-old took over from the earlier 12-year version. The name tells the story. "Quinta" is Portuguese for wine estate, and "Ruban" is Gaelic for ruby.

The distillery is known for having the tallest stills in Scotland, at just over five metres. Only the lightest vapours reach the top, so the spirit comes out soft and delicate. Bottled at 46% ABV, this whisky is not chill-filtered. That keeps more aroma and a fuller texture in your glass. The port casks give it a deep reddish-copper glow. It belongs to Glenmorangie's "Extra Matured" family of cask-finished whiskies.

Lift the glass and you will find cool peppermint and dark chocolate. Glenmorangie likens it to walking into a dark forest. On your tongue, walnut and black pepper meet mandarin orange and melted marshmallow. Dark chocolate and peppermint come back again as it opens. The finish is long and silky, with traces of orange and a gentle spicy warmth.

Critics like it too. It took Gold at the International Spirits Challenge in 2020. Whisky Advocate scored it 92 points.

The distillery suggests you enjoy it neat, with a little water, or over two or three large ice cubes. Serve it at room temperature for the fullest flavour. It is lovely with dark chocolate desserts, roasted nuts or a rich after-dinner cake.
