When you’re sharing the tiki cocktail love with friends you may find yourself in the precarious situation of your rum stock running low. But have no fear, CWSpirits is here! We’ve compiled a list of the best tasting rum for mixing and sipping without breaking the bank. Read on to find some of our favorite high-quality rums that will keep the party going no matter what your budget is.
Captain Morgan Private Stock Rum
Many of us may be familiar with the ol’ Captain after running into him at a backyard get together in our youth but this expression is like running into the Captain years later after graduation. More mature, mellow, smooth, and deliciously spiced, Captain Morgan Private Stock Rum is great for anyone who once turned their back on spiced rum. Enjoy it on the rocks or in a rum and coke for some added sweetness.
Mount Gay Black Barrel Rum
Made from a blend of rums that undergo both pot and column distillation, Mount Gay Black Barrel Rum is small-batch, handcrafted, and balanced with bold spicy flavors. This rum can be appreciated both as a sipper and a mixer and offers a tempered sweetness that brings notes of the oak barreling across the palate. Complex enough to enjoy on the rocks and smooth enough to mix together in a Dark and Stormy cocktail without burning a hole in your pocket.
Flor De Cana Grand Reserve Rum
Meaning “Sugarcane Flower” in Spanish, Flor De Cana Grand Reserve Rum is one of the few mass-produced rums from Nicaragua and boasts a medium body and complexity. With just a hint of sweetness, this rum isn’t for those looking for a sweet and syrupy finish. Solidly crafted, Flor de Cana Grand Reserve is dry and reveals flavors of dark roasted coffee and just a hint of cocoa amid oak. Who said you can’t have great aged rum on a budget?
Diplomatico Planas Rum
Diplomatico Planas Rum brings us a classic style of white rum that is quite sweet and vanilla forward. Although this rum is one of the higher price points on our list, it's well worth the cost. Diplomatico normally produces aged burly profiles for their traditional Venezuelan Rum, making the Planas expression one of the more approachable in both taste and price despite being aged for 6 years. Delicate and sweet, the flavors reveal a palate of coconut, pineapple, and peppery spice on the finish. Beautifully refreshing when sipped but also perfect as a mixer thanks to a higher ABV content than most classic style white rum.
Malahat Spirits Co. Ginger Rum
Looking to include a variety of rums on our budget list, we’ve included Malahat Spirits Co. Ginger Rum as a surprising winner with its kick of ginger flavor infused throughout the rum. Personally we don’t believe this rum works as a sipper but as a mixer, it works incredibly well and brings bold ginger flavor to your favorite rum cocktails. It’s certainly something different from what you normally get out of your typical rum, but at a price tag of $30 on CWSpirits we can’t help but shout out this spirit.
